Sihanoukville (and Koh Rong and Otres)

After spending time looking at all the ruins in Cambodia we headed South to Sihanoukville.  We spent one night there and then headed to a small Island called Koh Rong Samleon which was amazing, after that we headed to Otres for two nights and enjoyed the beach some more.

We caught the bus in Siem Reap at 6:30 am.  Our bus had no A/C as it was broken, meaning the windows also did not open.  This was rough going.  At about noon we were switched onto another bus with A/C but a double decker which, with the rough roads meant a lot of swaying!  Eventually we made it to Phnom Penh at 5pm (should have taken only 6-8 hours....) We then got put in another bus which would drive us to Sihanoukville.  We finally arrived at about 10 :30 pm.  Then we needed to grab a tuk-tuk and headed to our hotel.  This was a fairly dodgy hotel that was already bolted closed.  But luckily they opened it for us and let us in.  We then booked a ferry to the island for the next morning!

We woke up and headed down to wait for our tuk-tuk to come pick us up for the ferry.  But after waiting 30 min waiting we decided it wasn't coming.  Eventually we grabbed another tuk-tuk and made it with about 5 min to spare for the party bus.  Luckily everything leaves late here! We hopped on the boat and headed to the Island.

Enjoying the Sun on Our Last Day

After spending some great time on the beach, with friends from Camp Chief Hector, we headed back to the mainland.  It was pretty awesome because our friend was the leader of a really cool group called Free and Easy!  This was about a group of 30 Canadians who were having a great time and we got to hang out with them for a while. The beach itself was great!  And there are just some bungalows which means that there are only about 100 people on the island!  Tropical paradise with no people, pretty awesome!

After spending that time on the island, we headed back to the mainland and decided to stay with the Free and Easy Group who was heading to Otres for a couple nights.  They were having a Stampede party and really how could we say no?  We wore our best plaid and cowboy hats and enjoyed country music while eating a specially made BBQ!  It was great to feel like we were in Calgary again for just one night!  The next day we spent the day planning and on the beach!  (Although it was raining).

Having Fun on The Beach at Otres!
After spending some time on the beach we headed into Sihanoukville for the night where the whole group rented out a movie theater and we grabbed burgers and headed to the movies!  Pretty great last night in Cambodia!  And now tomorrow we are heading to Vietnam!  Can't wait for that country!  Cambodia was pretty great in the end, we saw history, both recent and ancient, beaches, and made some great new friends as well as running into some old ones as well!  Wish us luck with the border crossing!
